That Word of the Year

Remember your word for this year? How is it showing up in your life? Are you finding it useful? Interesting? Notable?

Have you forgotten it? Had to look up what it was? With January and February over, now is a good time to re-consider your word. You don’t have to keep it if it’s not serving you. If you don’t think of it at least once a week, it may not be the right word for you. And nothing is preventing you from choosing a more suitable one.

On the other hand, if your word keeps showing up in front of you, you have chosen a useful word. How are you working with it? What does it say to you?

Is it encouraging? Is it motivating? Does it comfort you? Inspire you? Are you using it in your conversation more often?

Today is a good day to think about how often you use your word–in conversation, in your journal, in your prayers.

Leave a comment and share what’s been happening with it. Trade it in for a more powerful or soulful one. Or be happy that you chose the perfect word for yourself and this year.

--Quinn McDonald is keeping her two words for this year. She’s finding them more challenging than she thought.

  2. My word is “expansive”. It has helped me stop when my inner screamed “Baaaaaaack! Go baaaaaaack! to that tiny safe place”. I´m not going forward yet but at least I´m not going backwards. I still have ten months left. :D

  3. My word is explore…I made an art piece with maps and my word in big glittery letters. It hangs at the end of my bed and it’s the first thing I see in the morning and the last at night. It’s really working well for me, especially in regard to creativity. I’ve taken up making paper beads, mixed media jewellery, and intend to learn wirework. I’ve revisited old skills like sewing and embroidery, made toys and started a quilt…& it’s only the beginning of March!!! I can’t wait to see what else I discover in my explorations.

  4. My word is weave (weaving) and it continues to show up in my work, my travels, day to day. It is a comforting word and also a challenging word — depending on different uses. I’m quite pleased with my choice.

  5. Experimental, this word keeps me on my toes!

  6. I have a big dose of CONTENTMET! I retired yesterday and feel very contented! I will continue to pursue contentment on all fronts, and so far I am successful

  7. My word, preparation, is showing up each day in my work. spread sheets, lists, lesson plans, all good and needed stuff.

  8. My word keeps appearing in a variety of ways – LOVE is the word – and there are times when i it comes into my consciousness that it confounds me, makes me angry (mostly at myself), or other times gives me peace n- so i think it is still working for me – and that i’ll keep it. However, Quinn, you were correct – this is not an easy word to live with every day!!!!

  9. I have two words as well – PLAY and SEEK. Both words are still working quite well for me. I think I am using them and hearing them more. And I am definitely trying to actually be using them. PLAY is easy – I just need to play more, and so I try to do that regularly, even though it is hard. But I also try to inspire others to play more, to spread the word. SEEK was a bit harder at first, but it is really showing up more. As in Seek more knowledge, Seek more inspiration, Seek more friends, and so on. I like my words and I think I will be keeping them. :)

  10. I had chosen Salt and Light as my (2) words, and am happy with my choice. I find them to be both comforting and inspirational. I set them as my signature in text messages, have them on my phone’s screensaver, wrote them on future journal and calendar pages…they encourage me to be encouraging…they lift my spirits in challenging situations and help me to take the high road…I want to work them into poetry and perhaps create a collage that uses them as it’s theme, with my impressions of salt and light…I’m already wondering how I will top them when I choose next year’s word!

    • This sounds wonderful, Lisa–I love the idea of salt–it’s such a great image of adding flavor and storing things for the future. No worries about topping it next year–if it’s that rich, it could continue into next year.

  11. I chose HEALTH for my word this year with the thought that if I reached one healthy goal I could start on another during the year. So far I have lost almost 10 pounds. My word has become part of my everyday thoughts. I am finding it much more inspiring to have the one word for the year – it makes me think of ME instead of taking care of everyone else around me and leaving me for when I get around to it. I have fallen into that trap too many times.
