Pen Review: JetPen Spica and a Giveaway

PEN WINNERS: Congratulations to Marianna of RedDancerStudio; Jamie of MyPurpleDoorStudios, and SimplyTrece for winning the pen giveaway! Winners have been emailed, and I’m waiting for their addresses to send the pens out.

Thanks to everyone who entered–especially those who left clever notes. I’m still working my way through, visiting all your blogs. Amazing work!  Here is how I chose the winners: I used a random number generator (http://www.random.org/ ) and chose one person from each page of comments. That allowed people who entered early to have the same chance as people who entered later. Again, thanks for entering, and yes, there will be more giveaways!

Yesterday, I reviewed three white pens from JetPens.com, today’s pens are completely different–they have a sparkle, come in colors, and are transparent.

Copic makes the “atyou Spica glitter” pens. The glitter is micro glass, smooth with a fine, gentle sparkle. The ink is water-soluble pigment and archival. The pens write on coated (slick) or uncoated stock and put down a fine, even line. On coated stock, the liquid does pool slightly, which means that the last place you pick up the tip will leave a slightly darker dot. I did not have the same problem on uncoated stock.

The pens are fiber-tip, for which I have a preference. I tried out the pink, purple, blue and green. They write on a variety of surfaces (see the video), but do not show up on dark stock–they are transparent and can be layered. I tried them on a variety of surfaces–watercolor, acrylic, and they write over it all. They are not meant to write on glass, plastic or metal. Unlike Copic markers, they are water-based pigment. This means they won’t bleed through any of the papers I tried. Jetpens.com’s website says the pens write for 360 yards.

Spica pens come in 24 colors, $2.25 each, or in in two, pre-selectetd color sets of 12 for $27.00 from JetPens.

Pen Giveaway: I’m giving away 3 pairs of 2 pens each–one of the white gel pens and one color Spica. I’ll choose  the colors for you. All you have to do is leave a comment below and let me know you want a pair of pens. I’ll pick a winner at random on June 5, so get your comments in.

That also means you have to sign in with your email address (it doesn’t show on the blog, but I can see it) so I can contact you for your mailing address. For this giveaway, I’m going to limit this to U.S. residents only.

Don’t forget to leave your comments! FTC-required disclosure: Jetpens.com provided the pens at no cost.

  1. The pens sound like they would meet so many needs of a book artist, paper maker, printmaker etc. How nice it would be to get a couple to try out.

  2. I always enjoy reading your emails and would love a chance to try out some new pens for doodling or journaling. Thanks for the opportunity to possibly win one of the sets.

  3. I live in a rural area so learning about new pens/products means relying on you and others to show them to me! I’d love to try them out. Thanks for the giveaways, but even more for the good, down to earth advice/words every day.

  4. Wow! I love the gel pens especially sparkles!I use them to add a more personal touch to my Thank you cards or even Christmas/Special occasion cards. I love using them to decorate envelopes too. I hope they have a dark color as I use them to address the envelopes making the recipient get a “special” mail piece. The post office doesn’t like the light greens! Looking forward to trying these out!

  5. Enjoy subscribing to your E-mails! I like the way you think “outside” and “inside the box” Too! I would really appreciate those Pens! Hope I’m Lucky today!

  6. OMG!! This would be so kewl!! I have never even seen a Copic pen in person. I would love to win a white pen, too. I kinda hankered for the one you said you liked best. It’s neat to have you review pens!

  7. I really like both your inventiveness and your practicality. Thanks for the testing and reviews..hope to win!!

  8. Thanks for the reviews. Whenever I get new pens, I play with them on different papers also! I don’t think I’ve tried the spica pens yet, how can that be? I would love to win one of the pairs you are offering. Thanks very much for doing this!

  9. What a wonderful opportunity. I would love to win these. You are right about white pens being hard to find, especially when it comes to a GOOD one! Thanks so much!

  10. Oh, please enter me! I’m always looking for a good white pen and I have tried the Spica’s and like them but haven’t gotten to make a purchase yet! Great give away!

    • Would you really do that? I’m working on a book trailer and would LOVE to have music for that. Or this other short video idea I’m trying. Really? You’d do that? How wonderful is that!
