Time for a giveaway! This time it is Jen Osborn’s wonderful book, Mixed and Stitched: Fabric Inspiration and How-to’s for the Mixed Media Artist.
You have to love a book that starts with a whole chapter on forgetting the rules. It starts with tips for the beginner on setting up your space, fabric, stove-top dying, and using bleach to remove color (but not all the way) from fabric.
Information on stitching is covered in the next section–from sewing machine to sketching with stitches to embroidery and faux felting.
If you aren’t excited by now, consider the projects done by painting on fabric–an inspiration board, a sketchbook, bunting, trinket box, and jelly picnic blanket. There are a lot more projects, too.

What a great giveaway! I’m almost done teaching an online workshop and will finish my Inner Heroes deck this weekend, so I’m ready for a new adventure!

Not only do they launch big fireworks, but we also changed our rules last year to allow anyone to buy most fireworks and set them off in their yards. I, whose house is surrounded by an Italian cypress-tree fence and have two towering palo verde trees (they burn explosively), would prefer people did not do that. But no one called to ask, so I’m going to hose down the hedge and hope for the best.
I’ve been thinking a lot about learning more about fabric dyeing this summer, and about working more fabric into my art journal. Looks like this book could be a great resource in both areas!

My mother-in-law from Greece is living with us now and she sewed all her life, I have been looking for a book with lots of pictures that could bridge the language barrier but that would give us something to work on together. This looks perfect 😉
I have a little stash of fabrics and could use some inspiration!
I don’t sew because I never had a machine, but I keep promising myself to take a few lesons. However, I do needlework, and play with fabric, so I think that counts a little towards the no rules concept. (which I love)

My friend and I are bookaholics and between us have a magnificent collection of books. We are in New Zealand and are supposed to be experiencing winter. The trouble is, nobody seems to have informed the universe of its duties this year…so far. Even for the cold blooded likes of me it has to be said that it has been mild. So far. Colder weather would give a greater excuse to hunker down with a good book or sit in front of the sewing machine. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
The weather is weird all over. We haven’t had any rain since March 2. Now I know we live in the desert, but Flagstaff had not much snow this winter (they have over 100 inches every year), so us desert dwellers are wondering how soon we are going to be thirsty.

Stitching has long been a hobby of mine. As soon as I was old enough to reach the pedal of the sewing machine my mother put me in front of a needle and I started making my own school clothes. From there to curtains and “make-do” projects when I was first married so long ago. The sewing machine and I have been friends for many years now.
It’s only the last year or two that I have been using it more for pleasure and art. This would be a very good way to learn more about the incredible sewing machine and needle and thread.

I would like to have that book! You are always so generous with your time and energy…….something that doesn’t happen very often these days. It gives me an idea on how to share some of my things with others as I am downsizing……and preparing for surgery on my shoulder…..so books will become a large part of my recovery…..but then look out when I am fully mended!
Is this a rotator cuff thing? Ugh, I”m facing that, too. I’m currently in denial. It’s fun to share books that others will love.

I recently downsized considerably and have sworn not to re-accumulate but my two weaknesses are books and my fabric stash. I love that this book will add to my shelf on one hand but help me use up the stash on the other.

Thank you for picking me that time! 😀 I have to add this one to my wishlist in case I need one. I have done much sowing or stitching recently but I did learn how to knit woolen socks. Those have come in handy this June as it seems that all the warm weather in stock for this summer got spend in May. Those huge flakes falling on blooming trees was shocking. No wonder you need woolen socks! It was 44ºC here yesterday, and even the pool water is 36ºC. If we could combine the two weathers–yours and mine–we would both be comfortable!
It has been a weird, weird summer weather-wise but then again, that’s Finnish weather for you 🙂 Behind this link you can see pictures of ‘spaghetti snow’ that according to the experts is really rare. The winter was unusually warm and many lakes did not freeze at all. So when is snowed on one such lake the snow formed into these strange strips. It might be because the water was at or even below freezing point without actually freezing. Who knows.
