Mixed and Stitched: A Giveaway

Time for a giveaway! This time it is Jen Osborn’s wonderful book, Mixed and Stitched: Fabric Inspiration and How-to’s for the Mixed Media Artist.

mixed___stitched1You have to love a book that starts with a whole chapter on forgetting the rules. It starts with tips for the beginner on setting up your space, fabric, stove-top dying, and using bleach to remove color (but not all the way) from fabric.

Information on stitching is covered in the next section–from sewing machine to sketching with stitches to embroidery and faux felting.

If you aren’t excited by now, consider the projects done by painting on fabric–an inspiration board, a sketchbook, bunting, trinket box, and jelly picnic blanket. There are a lot more projects, too.

It’s published by North Light (who is the publisher of two of my books, too), so

there are plenty of how-to photographs, tips, templates and an inspiration gallery.

Whether you love machine stitching or hand stitching, embroidery or just love fabric, this is a wonderful book to keep you busy and inspired.

Leave a comment if you want to win the book. I’ll choose a winner and announce it on Saturday, July 5th. Check in then to see if you’ve won!

Note: I purchased the book and an giving it away to make someone happy.

  1. What a great giveaway! I’m almost done teaching an online workshop and will finish my Inner Heroes deck this weekend, so I’m ready for a new adventure!
Stay cool and enjoy the 4th (as dry as it is there, does any city do a fireworks show with the risks of wildfires?).

    • Not only do they launch big fireworks, but we also changed our rules last year to allow anyone to buy most fireworks and set them off in their yards. I, whose house is surrounded by an Italian cypress-tree fence and have two towering palo verde trees (they burn explosively), would prefer people did not do that. But no one called to ask, so I’m going to hose down the hedge and hope for the best.

  2. I’ve been thinking a lot about learning more about fabric dyeing this summer, and about working more fabric into my art journal. Looks like this book could be a great resource in both areas!

  3. Okay, I’ve just reset my password for WordPress. Note to self: do NOT try to enter comments in the Bloglovin link to a blog. It doesn’t work. Anyway, here I am, 3rd try, leaving a comment while it is thundering outside and maybe rain will come to Northern Arizona!!!

  4. My mother-in-law from Greece is living with us now and she sewed all her life, I have been looking for a book with lots of pictures that could bridge the language barrier but that would give us something to work on together. This looks perfect 😉

  5. I don’t sew because I never had a machine, but I keep promising myself to take a few lesons. However, I do needlework, and play with fabric, so I think that counts a little towards the no rules concept. (which I love)

The book looks awesome. Thanks for spreading the joy it will bring.

  6. I hope this comment will work…I have had to reset my password on WordPress, so fingers crossed! The book looks fantastic. My friend and I are bookaholics and between us have a magnificent collection of books. We are in New Zealand and are supposed to be experiencing winter. The trouble is, nobody seems to have informed the universe of its duties this year…so far. Even for the cold blooded likes of me it has to be said that it has been mild. So far. Colder weather would give a greater excuse to hunker down with a good book or sit in front of the sewing machine. Thank you so much for the opportunity.

    • The weather is weird all over. We haven’t had any rain since March 2. Now I know we live in the desert, but Flagstaff had not much snow this winter (they have over 100 inches every year), so us desert dwellers are wondering how soon we are going to be thirsty.

  7. Hi, this book looks wonderful. What a happy post. Thanks Quinn. Love all your posts they mostly make me think and grow.

  8. This really looks like an amazing book! I like to think of myself as a mixed media artist, and wow this book would be an amazing tool for me to learn and grow! Thanks so much Quinn!

  9. I love are giving this away to make someone’s day! I would love to be that someone 🙂 Love your new collage work, haven’t taken the time to comment on it but it is lovely.

  10. Doesn’t giving something away, just because, feel good. I find that when I do that it tends to confuse the receiver, but I do it anyway. This looks like a very interesting book. Thank you for wanting to make someone happy.

  11. Spreading the joy. It’s just like you. You have so much good karma coming your way!
Stitching has long been a hobby of mine. As soon as I was old enough to reach the pedal of the sewing machine my mother put me in front of a needle and I started making my own school clothes. From there to curtains and “make-do” projects when I was first married so long ago. The sewing machine and I have been friends for many years now.
It’s only the last year or two that I have been using it more for pleasure and art. This would be a very good way to learn more about the incredible sewing machine and needle and thread.
    thanks, Quinn

  12. I would like to have that book! You are always so generous with your time and energy…….something that doesn’t happen very often these days. It gives me an idea on how to share some of my things with others as I am downsizing……and preparing for surgery on my shoulder…..so books will become a large part of my recovery…..but then look out when I am fully mended!

  13. Thank you so much for the giveaway opportunity! I would be absolutely happy if I were to win! I don’t sew very well on the machine and love fabrics. I would love to figure out how to include it in my mixed media artwork!

  14. I’ve been adding more and more stitching combinations of paper and fabric. What a fun book. It’s so kind of you to always give your loyal fans a book! Thanks Quinn and Happy 4th of July.

  15. I recently downsized considerably and have sworn not to re-accumulate but my two weaknesses are books and my fabric stash. I love that this book will add to my shelf on one hand but help me use up the stash on the other.
Rules are made to be broken – yes???

  16. I love your blog and live North Lught books and especially I have a love for fabric. Dying my own fabric is something I’ve always wanted to try; this could be the key that sets me free! Thanks for the chance — I hope you pick me!

  17. Sounds interesting but don’t count me in this time 🙂 Sorry I haven’t been in touch for awhile (first busy then just felt too lazy to do much…) but the book I won arrived and it is great! Thank you for picking me that time! 😀 I have to add this one to my wishlist in case I need one. I have done much sowing or stitching recently but I did learn how to knit woolen socks. Those have come in handy this June as it seems that all the warm weather in stock for this summer got spend in May. It even snowed few days before Midsummer’s Eve! ❄ You can watch a video about it here: http://areena.yle.fi/tv/2307274 (hopefully it is enabled for USA)
